Plans are underway in Asaba, the Delta State capital, to immortalize the victims of the October 1967 Asaba Massacre with a monumental memorial that will preserve their memory for generations to come.

The initiative features prominently among the priorities of His Royal Majesty, Prof. Epiphany Chigbogu Azinge, SAN, OON, the Asagba of Asaba, who has demonstrated a strong commitment to preserving the history, heritage and collective memory of the Asaba people.

As part of the initiative, internationally acclaimed artist and sculptor Mr. Enyi Echezona Jr., a multi-talented painter and sculptor of Anioma origin, has been approached to develop the proposed memorial. Echezona has already presented a proposal for the construction of a gigantic symbolic monument dedicated to the memory of those who lost their lives during the tragic events of October 1967.

The proposed monument is expected to serve not only as a memorial to the victims but also as an enduring historical landmark where present and future generations can learn about the tragedy and appreciate the resilience of the Asaba people.

Speaking on the initiative, the Asagba of Asaba acknowledged the painful history of the massacre and paid tribute to the remarkable resilience of the community in the aftermath of the tragedy.

The monarch particularly sal

uted the women of Asaba, many of whom, following the massacre and the loss of their husbands, were forced to assume the responsibilities of breadwinners and single-handedly raise their families. He described their strength, courage and sacrifices as an important part of the history and survival story of Asaba.

According to the monarch, the development witnessed in Asaba over the years stands as a testimony to the strength, resilience and determination of its people. He noted that the community has grown rapidly, particularly since it became the capital of Delta State, despite the painful experiences that shaped its history.

He stressed the importance of remembering the past while building a stronger and more prosperous future, noting that the proposed memorial would provide an opportunity to preserve the historical consciousness of the people.

Giving the public an insight into the proposed project, Echezona Jr. explained that the monument would stand approximately 45 feet tall and feature a lighthouse, mini gallery and mini museum. The names of the victims of the massacre would also be prominently displayed, providing visitors, researchers and tourists with an opportunity to engage with the history of the tragedy.

According to the artist, the project was conceived as a lasting tribute to the victims and as a means of ensuring that future generations never lose sight of the history and significance of the events of October 1967.

It is hoped that the proposed monument will complement the existing memorial artwork at Ogbeosowe in Asaba and further strengthen efforts to preserve the community's historical heritage.

Asaba is fortunate to have a traditional ruler who understands the importance of history and believes passionately in preserving the story of his people. The proposed monument is therefore more than a structure of art and architecture; it represents remembrance, honour, identity and a commitment to ensuring that the sacrifices of the past are never forgotten.

As Pen Master, I am particularly pleased to be part of this historic effort and honoured to work closely with the globally respected artist, Enyi Echezona Jr. towards preserving the memories, history and legacy of our people.

For Asaba, this is not simply about erecting a monument. It is about remembering the dead, honouring the survivors, celebrating the resilience of a people and educating generations yet unborn about a defining chapter in their history.
