Hon. Patrick Ashikodi and the Ibusa Tradition of Political Surprise

By Emeka Esogbue

Since Pen Master broke the news of the Abuja declaration by Hon. Patrick Ashikodi, popularly known as “The Political Messiah,” of his intention to contest for Nigeria’s presidency under the auspices of the NDC, reactions have remained mixed.

The declaration has generated a barrage of praise and reservations, commendations and doubts, from Nigerians both at home and across the globe. Indeed, the announcement comes as a challenge to Mr. Peter Obi, a globally recognized figure in Nigerian politics.

Interestingly, the declaration is coming from the relatively little-known “Political Messiah” from Ibusa, a community in Delta State. Although Hon. Ashikodi may not yet command the influence, popularity, and political stature of Peter Obi, the Ibusa community is certainly no stranger to producing political surprises.

Presidential ambition itself is not new within the nation’s political landscape, nor is it unfamiliar among distinguished sons of Ibusa. Hon. Ashikodi follows in the footsteps of notable kinsmen who previously declared similar ambitions. Among the most prominent is Prof. Pat Utomi, renowned political economist and one of Nigeria’s most respected academics.

Before Prof. Pat Utomi came Prof. Chike Onwuachi, a globally acclaimed anthropologist and perhaps the most widely read Ibusa indigene to date across diverse academic disciplines. He was also the first Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA).

There was equally Prof. Chris Nwaokobia, who once pursued political aspirations of his own. Prof. Nwaokobia, a respected Nigerian public affairs commentator and critic, remains active in national discourse to this day. There was also Dumebi Kachhikwu. Indeed, the people of Ibusa are known for springing remarkable surprises.

While the journey to the presidency is far from a tea party, Hon. Patrick Ashikodi has taken a bold and courageous step worthy of support and commendation. This is often how new political faces emerge especially when they enjoy the backing and encouragement of their people and region.
